Rechargeable batteries can trace their roots to 1859, when the precursor to the rechargeable leadacid battery was developed by French physicist Gaston Planté. Since then, battery usage increased steadily until a significant uptick occurred in rechargeable battery use over the past 15 years. The scope of applications for today’s rechargeable batteries is broad and growing. Major application areas for rechargeable batteries include portable electronics, vehicle transportation and stationary energy storage. Within each area, there are a host of sub-sectors, some of which are outlined in Table 1. Every application area has a unique set of performance and safety requirements for its batteries to meet. The nature of each end-use dictates which battery characteristics are most important for the application. Regardless of the application, the battery-performance parameters that are likely to be in play include the following: cost, safety, weight, cycle life, energy density and charged speed. A host of companies, large and small, established and startup, along with many research groups at academic institutions and national laboratories, are working to improve battery performance in one or more of those parameters.
